Hello! I’m AJ Rene, an actress and dancer based in Austin/San Marcos with roots tracing back to Dallas, TX. I am pursuing a BFA in Acting at Texas State University and a minor in Dance, graduating in spring 2025. My time at Texas State has been enriched with notable classes that have forever shaped me as an artist and human. Courses such as TV/Film with Richard Robicheaux, Characterization with Laura Lane, Physicalization with Michael Costello, Movement with Nadine Mozon, and Ballet and Contemporary with Ana Baer and Amanda McCorkle, just to name a few. These classes expanded my love for acting and dance more than I thought was possible, giving me tools that I will always take with me. From finding confidence as an actress in front of the camera and on stage to building an even stronger technical dance foundation, I’ve found a beautiful harmony in my artistry.
All About Me!
My artistic spirit leans heavily towards not only acting, but dancing, and various forms of visual art. During my senior year at Texas State, I had the pleasure of being the head choreographer for, Dance Nation. Dance Nation by Claire Barron holds a special place in my heart as it is a play at its core about childhood and what it’s like to be a dancer in that strange part of your life. I almost lost my love for dance through comparing myself to others, physically and talent-wise, both themes dealt with in the show. Honored to have won the Best Choreographer award, I was overwhelmed with gratitude for the cast and crew. Something I learned in a Ballet class taught by Rebecca Chappell, I found that fostering a safe and exploratory environment for everyone allowed the dancers to open up, and not only commit to the work but enjoy doing it. This means working with them to form choreography, as I was working with dancers on all different levels. It reawakened my love for dance and it was an experience I’ll hold with me forever and look forward to diving deeper into choreographing and teaching dance in the future.
Growing up, I gained an infinity for creating stories and all the wonderful forms of art I could express them with, whether writing, choreographing, or delving into a new play. I firmly believe that art serves as a medium to cultivate empathy, bridging the gap between diverse human experiences. Movement holds a special place in my heart, transcending not only in dance but also infusing life into acting performances. With a blend of unique perspectives and a diverse skill set, I strive to forge connections with audiences and fellow artists alike, bringing forth performances that resonate deeply. Be it gracing the stage, expressing emotions through movement and dance, or embodying characters on screen and stage, the world of acting and dance is where I find my joy. Stay tuned as my path unfolds, illuminating the realm of entertainment and beyond with my unwavering light.
Throughout my junior and senior years, exploring the works of Shakespeare, I've honed my craft under the guidance of Kate Glasheen-Dentino, and Charles Ney, even having the opportunity to soak up the essence of and learn from the amazing actors and educators of The Globe theatre the summer before my senior year. I explored theatre in London, getting to learn so much about acting, culture, and Shakespeare, even touring his home and gorgeous garden! The classes at The Globe taught me how to connect with Shakespeare, finding new meaning in his text that I can relate to today. I am so grateful to have gotten to perform in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse and have that chance that every performer wants, to play on stage.
